Image Gallery – Bulk Upload & Fast Re-Ordering

The current image gallery is time-consuming and inefficient when adding multiple product images. Each file must be uploaded individually and reordered manually with no simple way to bulk manage. For larger listings (10–25 images), this creates unnecessary admin time and friction.

Proposed Improvements:

1. Multi-Image Upload

  • Enable drag-and-drop or multi-select uploads (up to 25 images at once).

  • Accept PNG, JPG, and WebP formats.

  • Show upload progress per file.

  • Automatically resize and convert to required formats.

  • Retain drop order as initial image order.

2. Drag-and-Drop Reordering

  • Allow tiles to be repositioned by drag-and-drop.

  • Optional arrow buttons for left/right movement.

  • “Main” image can be starred/pinned in a single click.

3. Bulk Actions

  • Multi-select for delete, replace, or apply size options.

  • Inline confirmations (no extra pop-up steps).

  • De-duplication check to prevent duplicate uploads.

4. Alt Text Automation

  • Automatically generate alt text using SKU + product name.

  • Allow inline editing after upload for fine-tuning.

5. Clipboard & File Management

  • Support paste-from-clipboard (Ctrl+V).

  • Auto-rename files to a clean standard or similar (e.g. SKU_01.webp).

Nice to Haves:

  • Import images from a URL or ZIP (auto-unpack and populate).

  • Copy gallery from another SKU (clone existing image sets).

  • Alt-Text Helper: auto-generate from SKU + product title; editable inline.

Expected Outcome:

This enhancement would make adding and managing product imagery dramatically faster and cleaner.
Uploading and arranging a full 12+ image gallery would drop from 5+ minutes to under 90 seconds — a massive time saving across the entire catalogue.

This is a very large specification with lots of 'extra' requirements in it. We are going to look at an incremental approach starting with Drag and Drop uploading. Image ordering is currently based on the order of the Image Keys so Drag and Drop re-ordering would be a significant change. Similarly when uploading a multiple selection of images it would not be possible to determine which image goes to which key. As a first attempt we are going to look at single drag and drop taking the next available key; we will also look to see if we can provide 'targets' for each key which would then enable you to upload in any order.
