Sometimes a small change of SKU in an ERP system is required due to product update / revision. Changing the SKU rather than creating a new one ensure that you do not lose the historical data of that item such as sales and purchasing however if we do this then the relationship to the item on the website is broken and we need to import a fresh, copy all the data over filed by field and then delete the old record.
It would be great if we could simply update the Stock Code field on the admin and then re-connect it to the new record.
This also means that Google page ranking & SEO would not be affected.
It is possible to do this in the CMS.
Make sure the new Stock Code exists in the Accounts System
Go to the SKU and press the Detach Button
The Stock Code then becomes 'Editable'
Type in the new Stock Code
Save and Close the SKU
Edit the SKU again
Press the Attach Button
The SKU now has a the new stock code and will synch with the accounts system
