Gob2b provides Matrix Products so that you can use a single page to represent products that come in a range of attributes. At its simplest this may be size and/or size and colour. Matrix products are displayed with dropdown selectors to choose the attribute and the SKU stock code that matches this selection will be shown at the end of the URL as ?selected=XYZ123. The dropdown selectors are not ‘links’ so Google will not crawl them.
In most cases the Description and Image will be common to all the SKUs so can be entered at the line level. Images and Descriptions can be entered at the SKU level and if they are they will change as the dropdowns are set – particularly useful to show different colours. Google dislikes duplicate content so GOb2b’s Matrix product always shows the URL of the matrix product as the canonical in the meta content on the page whatever SKU is selected.
There may be occasions where you want SKUs to be crawled and indexed on Google and their content to be canonical. This idea is to have a ‘SKU Pages’ check box on the Matrix editor. When this is selected:
The dropdowns are replaced by a set of SKU page links
The SKU Page link would be /<sku Url Part>
The SKU Page meta canonical would be the SKU page URL
The Sitemap would show the SKU page URL
