Horizontal Filtering is useful when you have a lot of options to filter through, as otherwise the filters list can get massive quite quickly, or you collapse them, either of which doesn't make for an easy buying experience.
In the example attached, if they were vertical and not collapsed, there would be around 150 lines of filter, neither of which is ideal.
